You don't need to go back to England to renew your 3 months visa. Just go to Uruguay in a nice one day tour.
The maximum you can do this is 3 times. After this your are illegally in the country.
But don't worry, nobody cares, and the only problem should be that when you want to leave the country you must pay a bill of 50 US dollars.
Also, you can take some course and with the inscription paper you can get a student visa for 1 year, you can renew for another year.
After 1 year you can ask for the temporary residence.

Do they not have any visas that could be appropriate for you? I'd be very hesitant about overstaying, regardless of internet wisdom. Who knows what could change in two years? Particularly if you have a long term view for this relationship I'd be keeping it al above board.
Of course, maybe that's just my western view of things
