Might I suggest an enhancement to the country list in the optional details. I am writing an entry that covers a whole region (the Middle East) and I wish to tag it as such.
You could tag the blog entry (or photo) with region names if you like. That would seem to achieve what you're looking for wouldn't it?

Sorry for delay in replying, just arrived in Italy. The tags would work but I think it would still be an improvement to have the regions as well in the "country" field. You can publish a page with nothing in the "country" field and it does not appear on the list of countries on the right hand side.
I might also have mixed up "tags" with "location / country" in my original post, just to add to the confusion.
Photos require a mandatory location which in some cases might not be appropriate.

There's a couple of problems I can see adding predefined regions to the main country list.
1. We would need a good list of regions. This is not as easy as a list of countries (which is already a nightmare to maintain!)
2. The dropdown list where you select the country would become VERY long. There are a lot more regions around the world, then there are countries.
3. It's hard to draw the line with regions. Some people will want states in there (only natural). Some will want regions within states.
What I'd be more inclined to do is provide an option to tag the post as *several* separate countries. So you wouldn't need to just select one. That would seem to cover part of the issue for you which is that just selecting one country does not reflect the post content that well.
And now for something right out of left field.
I am currently posting all my historical travels and am travelling back through the mists of time to 1986, i.e. back before the fall of the Wall.
What are the chances of having the following countries added to the country list:
Czechoslovakia
Soviet Union
Yugoslavia
These would be more accurate than the current day entities of Russia etc.

Well, that is an interesting suggestion Our trend has always been to keeping it reflecting current countries. There could be a lot of problems trying to support old names of places as well as the current ones. I'm not really sure I want to head down this route for that reason really.
My inclination is to say that this is probably too rare a feature to build into our main country list. It might just confuse a lot of people into entering the wrong thing.
I understand your thinking.
However, one possible way to avoid any confusion is to have a "Historical section" at the bottom of the main list, i.e. after the end of the current alphabetical list and headed up as such.
