Visa/Link Card in ATMs...

Now I have only started wondering about this since I found these forums, as I previously figured that surely that my Visa debit card would be fine to use in global ATMs, but under the traveller's tools section it clearly says:

Maestro and Cirrus are linked to MasterCard, so if the ATM accepts MasterCard it should accept your debit card if it has Cirrus on the card. Is the only thing on the back of your card "Link"? Link is to do with the UK ATM network.

Best thing to do is check with your bank about the countries you intend on visiting.

Hi,
Yes it only has Link on the back, although I've never had a problem using it in ATM's outside of the UK before (it's a Nationwide card which I chose based on their policy of no fees at the time...!), it occurs to me that on my next trip I may be travelling to more rural areas where I suspect there isn't going to be choice of cash machines....

I will be having a word with the bank before I go anyway, so I will check on the specific countries then - never quite understood how these banking networks work, but I definately don't want to get caught without cash, so worth finding out now!

It's not a Visa Debit card from Nationwide?

Yep, it's a visa debit (see my first post) - which is why I previously assumed it should be fine - but I had no idea what this "logos on the back" thing means (or which logo is more/less important in the grand scheme of banking) which is why I asked the question.

But I get the impression from your last reply that I might not need to worry about this at all?

Yeah, the card should be fine in most ATMs - the ones that accept Visa. Sorry - I completely missed the mention of visa debit card in your first post - and apparently in the thread title too!

Thanks for the help in straightening this out anyhow

I guess that Visa ATMS should be as or nearly as plentiful as the Maestro/Cirrus ones recommended on this site, so hopefully there shouldn't be a problem...!

Just noticed that Mastercard do prepaid travel cards though, so perhaps i should get one of those too - then it's pretty much guaranteed that one or the other should work!
