East Coast October 2011

Hi guys,

Hi Karl,

I'm hopefully arriving in Cairns around 28th Sept too (yet to book flights) and want to work down East Coast to Brisbane - I've got friends there so I'm probabaly going to do a flat share with them. It would be great if you want to meet up!

I've had advice from people that Greyhound is good if you don't mind the time - i.e. it takes a looooong time to get to some places and in some instances if you just want to get from A to B it's better to fly because the prices are cheap (ish).

The best way by far is probably to rent a car and drive down because you can do things on your own time and get off the beaten track a bit. If you and your friends have got drivers licenses, you could all share driving. The main thing to look at would be the cost of the car plus petrol etc.

Hope that's some help!

Hey Rach,

it is thanks, Greyhound seems the obvious choice... but i think i'm going to have to drive somewhere at somepoint haha you're right, flying some places will certainly be cheaper.

We're thinking of getting an apartment in Brisbaine ourselves as it seems an ideal place to look for work... but we'll see what happens

How long are you looking on staying in Cairns for?

Just to mention another option - Premier Motor Service also do hop on hop off passes like Greyhound but they're about 15% cheaper. Greyhound have more buses per day though, but if you're flexible about what time you travel then Premier is a good deal.

Cheers mate, just had a look then, they seem very reasonable... thanks again

Greyhound is very easy and hits most of the main coastal spots that you're likely to be interested in. When I did the East Coast in 2006 (2.5 months going from Cairns to Sydney), I simply hired a car at a couple of towns en route to see places that were going to be difficult via Greyhound or public transport (e.g. Atherton Tablelands near Cairns, a couple of national parks near Brisbane, etc).

However check the prices for the Greyhound passes, as well as for a one-way rental. It may turn out that, with 3 of you, it could be cheaper to simply buy a second-hand car in Cairns then sell it when you get to Sydney.

Hi john, thanks for the info - I was looking into this but its really just the hassle of selling the car when we no longer need it! I'm guessing it may not be too hard, but with it being money we would need I need to research it a lot more
