Hi everyone
Hey Hun,
Ive heard Habitat HQ is good from someone who went to Melborne so check that one out, and she also said to stay in a mixed share dome of 10 xx
Hi
I was in Melbourne about 3 months ago and have to say it was by far my fav city, I travelled all down the east coast so stayed in lots of hostels. We stayed at Habitat Hq for one night, really nice and clean but we moved to St Kilda Beach House Hostel, were I spent the best two weeks that I had in oz. The hostel is above a bar and its literally in the centre of St Kilda, where everything goes off! The hostel is great fun and really socialble. As there is a bar downstairs you can get cheap drinks and food, which will be perfect for NYE celebrations! The hostel can get a little nosiy with the bar being downstairs but if your wanting a party environment for NYE then thats were I would reccommend. I met some really good frinds at this hostel so maybe this is why its one of my favs! Agree with the comment above, mixed dorms are the best way to meet a mixture of people and you can always move dorms if you end up in one which dose not really suit you.
Im planning on going back to Melbourne late in this year, so we may bump into each other
Feel free to ask me any more questions about Oz I'll try and help
Hi Amy
Thanks for the advice, sooo helpful! I've heard good things about both the hostels you mentioned so i'm gonna do a bit of research. Whereas i'd normally be wary of staying in full-on 'party hostels' for long periods of time, I think it's gotta be done over the new year period!
Have you got any further with your plans for South America? Do you know where abouts you'll be starting in Oz? Oh and have you got a working holiday visa? Questions questions questions!
If you want, you can add me on facebook - Nadia Elshawarby

Hi Nadia
Yeah you will be fine at either one of the hostels, I would say that St Kilda as an area would be best to stay in, especially for that time of year. Overall Melbourne was a lovely place and a laid back city with a nice relaxed vibe about it, but there was always something going off. the best way i would describe it is that its like Camden only on a larger scale. I know what you mean about 'party hostels', normally you might want to get some peace whilst on your travels but as its xmas and nye you may aswell get in amoungst it all and party away!
Not got any set plans yet on my trip for South America, Im just researching into each country and seeing how much money I will be needing, so Im busy away working as much as I can to save the pennies up! but if all else fails I may just fly straight to oz!
When I fly to oz I think I'll go straight to Melbourne as that was my fav city and I've already covered the east coast. Along with Melbourne been my fav I'd say that Byron Bay was also one of the highlights. Great little town with plenty of stuff going on and we stayed in a really good hostels called Aquarium there, were you get a free meal with the price of your room, much needed when your on a budget! It was a shame when we were in oz as that whas when all the flooding was going on so we had to miss out Brisbane so cant really say much about that. When I go back Im going to stay there for as long as possible as I loved the country and the way of life, everyone is just so realxed and very nice people! Im going to apply for my visa next pay day then thats all sorted! Oh im getting so excited now!

All I will say is whatever you do, don't stay in Coffee Palace hostel in St Kilda, far and away the worst hostel I encountered in 18 months away. No coffee, and it most certainly is not a palace...
There's this Melbourne Metro YHA Hotel. It's in Queensberry Hill. I've been there and my stay was fine. Good enough for a hostel.
