Most big insurance companies you see on the street will cover you up to 60-90 days within one year. Most of them include (sometimes optional for extra fee) sport activities. Read their small print before you choose them.
If you need insurance for more than 90 days in a year - you need to buy long-stay/backpacker insurance. If you are from the UK/US/Aus, it shouldn't be difficulty for you to find an online insurance broker. There are even websites that compare them. Most of them offer you the option to add extra cover for sport activities.
However, if you are from a country were backpacking is less common, companies that offer backpacker insurance are very-very limited. Few brokers that may provide insurance for other citizens are for example worldnomands, worldwideinsure or columbusdirect. I think all of them are backed by axa insurance.
The most well known backpacker insurance agent with probably the best cover (including extreme adventure activities) is worldnomads.com. However, they are the most expensive too.
When you select your insurance broker and cover package: always read the small print!

As I am a Czech resident, it is not that easy to find a good international insurance company that covers my nationality as well. Anyway, I have checked the options you mentioned and they look great - any personal experience?

Worldnomads is probably the best, however they are very expensive compared to the other two. I guess you will also have to decide what you want to have cover for.
If I had to choose between worldwideinsure (wwi) or colombusdirect, I would choose wwi. Unfortunately, I had experience with both, and wwi seemed more organized when it came to handling incoming phone calls and starting the reclaim process.
Also, wwi is more flexible extending your policy while you are already on the road, and the maximum period of policy time is longer too.
AXA insurance stands behind both, but there are differences in price-cover. As i recall wwi had better policy, but do check it.

A very informative piece of information. There are many of us who don't understand the value of travel insurance.
Like another person already mention Worldnomads is a really good travel insurance.
