Traveling from England,to Scotland then to Ireland.

In 2012 we are going to visit friends in Liverpool,England. We will go from there (taking a rental car) and travel up through part of Scotland. We want to go to Islay, Scotland (by ferry) and then from there, go to Northern Ireland. My question is:

You can stay in Scotland and get a ferry to Northern Ireland, as there is the Stranraer-Belfast service.

Are you intending on taking the hire car from England/Scotland over to Northern Ireland? If so, be aware that you may not be able to take it into the Republic of Ireland, if you intend on crossing the border from Northern Ireland (UK), depending on what the hire car company allows. You may also want to double check if you can take the hire car over to Northern Ireland in the first place.
