I am hoping someone can provide information as to what the consequences are for overstaying a VISA in Italy.
I was staying in Italy last year and was considering overstaying my visa and working illegally until the family I was living with got in touch with a friend of theirs that is an immigration lawyer, Italy has really strict immigration and she highly advised against me staying because she has seen cases where people were heavily fined (it's a federal offense) and where they have been imprisoned.
I think this mainly is because of all the African immigrants that arrive illegally from Africa, but I also know that the very anti-American attitude that public officials have (.. most likely because of the Amanda Knox situation) might create problems going through airport security in Italy.
I didn't say all this to scare you, and I promise that as far as I am concerned all of this information is 100% accurate.
I hope all goes well, please update me as I am curious to what happens.

You may be very lucky and nobody will look closely at your passport, you may be held at the airport and questioned, fined and even jailed, or you may be deported after being questioned - and after your flight has left so you'll have to buy a new ticket.
How did you finance your long stay? That's one of the main questions. If you're working illegally, your situation gets worse.
As for arrival in the UK, again - anything is possible.
They may not notice your overstaying, they may notice and not care, or they may notice and think since you didn't respect the law in Italy,you also won't respect the law in the UK, and consequently refuse entry.
Nobody call tell you now and I repeat: Anything is possible.
