I am from Zagreb.
Of course its possible to do it in one day but it depends on how long you are planning to stay in Plitvice. Split is connected with Ljubljana (via Zagreb) all the way with highway for which you have to pay. In Croatia you pay on tollbooth (around 200 kn) and for Slovenia you need to buy a sticker at the border (15€). From Zagreb to Ljubljana is 1.45 h and from Split to Zagreb is around 3.30 hours. You can drive 140 km/h easily on the highway.

Thanks! I have looked online at car hire prices and it seems very expensive, just as a point of interest I changed the nationality to 'Croatian' on the search and the price dropped by 50%. Is there a good company for cheap car hire. We will probably only hire for 2 days, taking the car in Split and returning it to Zagreb.
