You could try checking on under travel partners and ride sharing to see if anyone is headed up that way, other than that I think you'll be looking at the options you've mentioned.
You can also try this new ride share site. They have a few offers of rides from Sydney to Brisbane, you could probably get them to drop you off on the way up. Might also try getting a flight to Gold Coast which is only 40 mins north of Byron and you can get a bus down for $10
