Afghanistan? You're kidding. There is a war going on there and people are being killed. As a non-muslim you could be blown up and killed just as an example to other non-muslims.
If you want the hippy life, take a flight to India and head down south. It's cheap and some great beaches and great weather in Europe's winter months.

The old hippie trail used to go through Afghanistan, which is not recommended at the moment.
Amended overland route goes via Turkey, Iran and Pakistan before you enter India. It is also possible to travel through the very northern part of (Kurdistani) Iraq before entering Iran - read more about this on wikitravel.
Almost all these areas are safe to travel, including Iran. Actually, for most travellers Iran is one of the nicest experiences in the world.

Another - sort of hard-core traveller but highly recommended alternative - is via: Turkey-(Kurdistani Iraq)-Iran-Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan-China-Pakistan-India. This is an ultimate adventure, going through some of most fascinating parts of the world.
North of Pakistan - via the amazing Karakoram highway - is said to be totally safe. All other countries are safe too.
Visas will be the number one challenge on such journey - best is to try to obtain as many visas as possible beforehand and collect only the remaining visas on the way.
In short: Turkey (visa free or at border), Kurdistani Iraq (visa at border), Iran (obtain visa in advance!), Turkmenistan (get 3day transit visa in Iran), Uzbekistan (get visa in latest in Iran), Tajikistan/Kyrgyzstan (get visas in Uzbekistan), China (get visa home, in Iran or in Kyrgyzstan), Pakistan (get visa home, or maybe if you're lucky at border), India (best to get it at home, in Pakistan a bit tricky but not impossible).
From China it is also possible to travel thru Tibet Autonomous Region (with a tour group) onto Nepal. You can get Nepal visa at border, and India visa in Nepal.
All these routes are probably the most interesting ones in the world.
