Maldives independently

I'm hoping to go to the Maldives for a few days in December before travelling in Sri Lanka and am looking for advice about the best way to do it. Is it best to book into a resort that includes airport transfers or would it be easy enough to book my own accommodation and then book the transfers myself? I'm a sole female traveller and I'm mainly interested in snorkeling while I'm there - can anyone recommend a good area and resort for me to stay in?

I am not sure whether this would help ya out cuz by now you must have already arranged the trips. Well I am from Maldives. Quite frankly most of the ppl come here thru travel agencies and its gonna cost you like hell. What most of the ppl dont know is you can actually enjoy Maldives with a very small budget even. Visiting Islands, and accomodations can be arrange fairly cheaply.. let me know if you need any help.. i could push you towards the right direction.

Many don't realise that the Maldives are strict muslim islands.

I'd say spend some more time in Sri Lanka. Some nice beaches, people, towns, places to visit.

Thanks guys. I was in the Maldives last week and did up spending rather a lot, but it was a nice treat! I'll bear your comments in mind if I go back FoxXx. I'm now in Sri Lanka.

I know someone who taught English in the Maldives. He is Asian and I met way back in 2007. He probably did volunteer work. Maldives is one of the places where only richest or the elite in my country would visit. So I'd love to go there, but since I am not rich, I was hoping I could do some volunteer work. I'm just wondering, coz big chance I might be in India soon.
