Trip from east to west

I am planning a trip from Charlotte NC to Las Vegas in November. I would like to see the Grand Canyons on our way. I need some help figuring out how to do this, I don't know anything about the area. I have looked at some maps....I think it would be good for us to go to the Canyons first then head to Hoover Dam and then Las Vegas. I need to know logistics. Where do I fly into from Charlotte NC, Phoenix??? then rent a car and drive to Canyons??? Are there any hotels near the canyons, If I go in from the south rim and exit through the north rim how long will that take, should I spend the night on the other side and drive to Hoover Dam the next day? Any ideas???

Rebecca,
I think your best bet will be to fly into Las Vegas. Plenty of airlines to choose from. A quick search on found that was the cheapest.

The problem flying into Phoenix is that most car rental companies charge a drop-off fee. This charge alone makes flying into Vegas and renting here a better option. Check. Find the best airfare into both LAS & PHX. The check on car rental prices. Ask about renting in PNX and leaving the car in LAS. Once you have your figures, you will know what is your best option.

The GC is about a 5 hour drive from LV. I drove a UK couple, Allan & Gail over to the GC a few years ago. We stopped at Hoover Dam for the tour, took Route 66 part of the way and stayed in for the night. Plenty of decent priced motels in Williams. The leaves Williams for the GC everyday. You might consider that option if you like trains. The GC is about a 1 hour drive north of Williams. If you get up early, you can be at the GC by 8am. This gives you an entire day to tour the GC. The closes when the first snow arrives. It will be closed in Nov. You can hike from the south rim to the north, but this is a very difficult slog. You would then turn around and hike back, not even remotely feasible. If you leave the south rim by 5pm, you can be in your hotel by 10pm.

I have photos of this trip over to the Grand Canyon on pages 27-28. Click on 'USA' to filter out the other photos. Send me a PM if you have any questions.
