Before coming to Vietnam I read a really fun book called "Hanoi Jane" that was set in Vietnam. It's "chick lit" -- romantic fiction -- written by Elka Ray. As well as being an entertaining story, it gave me a good idea of what to expect in Vietnam. Now that I'm here I see that the writer's descriptions are totally spot on!

I really enjoyed' by DeMille. Not chick lit, but worth reading for someone in HAN. Shows how much VN has changed since tourism really kicked off in late 90s.

I read Up Country too. Pretty good book!
