A friend and I have rough plans to travel around India this summer for a maximum of 7/8 weeks. It's not that much time, but we want to establish a rough route in which we can see all the best sights but also have the freedom to explore other places not crowded with tourists. If anyone has been, or has suggestions on where we should go and in what order, i'd be grateful to hear from you. We're not even sure where is best to fly into.
The summer can be very hot and sticky in India, so that may decide where you go.
How about including some of these destinations:
Mumbai & Elephanta Caves
Aurangabad with Ajanta and Ellora
Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal
Hampi
Hassan, Belur and Halebid
Mysore
Bangalore
Delhi
Agra
Jaipur
Jaisalmer
Udaipur
Pushkar
Grete Howard suggested very great but all these are in north india if you add south indian places like masoor not too crowded, trivandrum, cochin, goa, konark, khajuraho etc.
or contact any travel adviser who can help you.
There are many places to visit for a vocational trip along with family in South India. The places like
Alappuzha, Kanyakumari, Kochi, Madurai, Mahabalipuram, Munnar, Mysore, Thekkady, Thrissur, and Trivandrum can be visited along with tour packages in south India. South India Tourism guides the individuals for best packages too.
Hi
I lived in india for 16 years....Have travelled around quite a bit....7/8 weeks is not that much time to see all of india...But im sure its enough time to check out some of the amazing places around India.....
To be frank....Finding a place not crowded in India is pritty hard but dosent mean you cannot find a quiter place....
I could be able to give you some suggestions if you can tell me what kinda places you like?....
Your interest will give me a better idea in suggesting places for your visit....
Places not to be missed are
Delhi (crowded, costly, high tech, party life and the list goes on)
Agra (Taj Mahal) lovers paradise
Goa (beaches and beaches, heaps of tourist....tax free alcohol)
Kerala (relaxed, heaps of tourist visit here....but you will for sure find a place amazing and quite in kerala).....its my fauv
In a nut shell......North of India is more of a party life style...South is more laid back and spiritual life style....
You will find temples everywhere is india...But if your keen on visiting them then again i can advise you if your interested.
Let me know
Muzza
Thankyou everyone- this is great.
I am a bit concerned about the season i'll be going in- humid/monsoon season. How badly will it affect my time there? Not so bothered about 'quiet', but laid back and spiritual sounds amazing and more what i'd like to do. Where should I avoid? and does anyone know whether it's cheaper to fly into Delhi or Mumbai? Or somewhere else?
If you are visiting India with 7-8 weeks only, its better to divide the whole time into 3 Parts:
4 Weeks - North India, Indian Himalayas in Himachal (Manali, Rohtang Pass) and Uttarakhand (Badrinath and Gangotri, the source the great Ganges River), Forts and Wildlife Sanctuaries of Rajasthan..
1 Week - Eastern India, Cherrapunjee and Mawsynram, the rainiest place in the world, picture perfect rainforests...
3 Weeks - South India, especially Kerala, Trivandrum, Kochi, Kumarokam Backwaters, Munnar, Mysore, Goa beaches for tanning...
You should make Delhi as your base, because it is well connected with the places mentioned in your first part of the travel.. although Delhi will be a bit hot and humid, it will be cheaper than Mumbai!!
Happy Traveling!!

I might be a little late on this one...
Grete Howard has touched on pretty much everything... Here are a few more tips though
The season you have chosen may affect your plans... you should avoid traveling to Mumbai during rainy season ( if you plan to visit around July-Aug)...
Few places you may not miss on... Haridwar and Rishikesh (spiritual), Kerala try visiting Munnar, Kovalam and Kumarakom(Backwaters)... New Delhi (Capital of India), Avoid going to Rajasthan during Summer as it will be Very Hot... Himachal Pradesh is a good option to get close to The Himalayas (Manali -home to Dalai Lama, Shimla, Dharamshala etc.)... Leh in Kashmir is a Must Visit...
If you need help, try to get in touch with the Government agencies or Recognised Travel agents and not any one who walks up to You. Take care of your personal possessions especially Money and Passports... be wary of touts and Please Do Not get fooled by people who approach You and tell you that they would help you get cheap Taxis, accommodation or anything else...
Flying in to Delhi or Mumbai would not make a difference until You have a Specific Route... Delhi if You want to start from North India... Haridwar, Rishikesh, Manali, Shimla, Leh etc... or Mumbai if you start from Southern India - Kerala, Goa, Bangalore, Mahabaleshwar, Mysore, Hampi, etc...
Hope the above helps !!
Cheers and Welcome to Incredible INDIA !!!
