Hi everyone,
Each island is about the size of England and has a fair bit to see. End of February is late summer there so maybe start South Island as that will be colder than the North Island in their winter. You could go earlier and catch more of their summer? (and miss winter back home)
Have you a skill that will help you get a job in NZ? They are suffering from the recession too and early last year kicked out a lot of British workers so NZ-ers returning home looking for work would have a job. I would think Auckland would be the best place for work. Check out some employment agencies.
The best way of getting around is by car, if you have a licence.
Hi Lush
I'm heading over to NZ some time in Jan on a WHV.I have not yet booked my flight as i'm not sure where to fly into but i think thats good advice from cyberia and start in christchurch to make the most of the weather down south.i will be looking to work for awhile and some were to rent, being a carpenter i hope to find some work but dont mind what i do really,as long as it's funds my trip.
Hey
Thanks for the info cyberia think i've made my mind up plan to fly over to Christchurch 1st and see how things go, hopefully have my flight booked next few days.
chambers85 have you booked your flight yet or decided where you're starting off, would be great to possibly meet up there, no real plan set out but hoping to stay in NZ long as possible, so will be looking to flat share once find job out there..
As a Kiwi living in the South Island, let me just warn you Chch is still experiencing some pretty big earthquakes - not that this should put you off your travels, or coming to the South in any way, I just mean that while you may choose it as your entry-point, you'll want to be moving on to find work etc. Central Otago (Queenstown, Cromwell, Roxburgh etc) is good for fruit picking/packing and vineyard work. Queenstown is also super popular with international backpackers for bar/restaurant work or if you plan to stay long enough, work on the ski fields when the season opens
hey_monkee thanks for that, well I'm flying into chch 22nd feb, only plan short stay there then will be moving on to queentowns, just worked out cheaper flying into there
plan to stay in nz for year so definitely will be looking forward to ski season..
