Getting work through an agency

Most threads seem to be people coming over here to Oz, when I'm trying desperately to get out of this country, don't get me wrong I love this beautiful country I call home but I went to Hawaii in August and got bitten badly by the travel bug. I want to get work in the UK or USA through an agency, has anyone done this successfully? any suggestions? I always hear rumours of people getting scammed, which would so happen to me, ugh. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Not sure if this is any help, but I'm from England, and to get work for myself I've never gone through an employment agency, if that's what you're talking about.
There is a serious lack of jobs at the moment, but I think if you're willing to try hard you'll get something!
What sort of work were you looking for?
Most jobs in shops etc you have to apply online anyway, so you could do a lot of looking for yourself to get an idea :-)
When I came to Australia I didn't use an agency either, I just handed out about 75 CV's and heard back from 3 jobs

Not sure if that's any help, but good luck! :-)

Sounds like what I do in Asia... But I recently got a job from an agency... I got to evolve and discover how online applications work.

I didn't hear back from any of my online applications in Australia.. they weren't much use to me, I think sometimes handing in your CV directly is a lot more personal, and they get a lot more from meeting you, well that's what I've found anyway

I think that I'd rather do it myself but the idea of getting on a plane and just 'winging it' kind of scares me, I'm worried I won't get work and just come back home with nothing to show for myself. Can't you only get one working holiday visa for the UK? I wouldn't want to waste it.

As for work type, I'm not fussy, I'll do anything really. Although I lack qualifications for working with kids, so AU pair is probably not a possibility.

I've got no idea about the visa's sorry! I'd definately take enough money to survive on for a while, even if you do go through an agency.
You'd be suprised about au-pairing! I had no qualifications, only baby sitting experience, and I didn't struggle to get an au-pairing job! I had a bad experience with it, but I know lots of people who love it, I think it depends on the family situation, and what you want from the trip.

Where abouts in England were you wanting to work?
I think you'd struggle to find a job before you got there- I tried applying for work before I got to Australia in shops etc and it was useless! I had to just wait and see. There's lots of supermarkets and chain shops that I would apply to as soon as you get there.

You have to have a National Insurance number in the UK to work, not sure if its the same for travellers... it's like your Tax File Number

I'll have to look into it more, visa's and the like, thankyou for your advice though. Might look into AU pairing then!.... and getting one of these national insurance numbers... Might go into a STA Travel agent... so much to organise! thankyou!
