Bangkok to Vientiene by train was cheap... way cheaper than by bus. Apparently.
Well, ofcourse it ain't the sleeper ticket.

I did the Bangkok to Singapore run a few years ago when the Yellowshirts closed the airport. The bus is a little faster. But on the train I could walk around more without making the driver crazy like on buses. Toilet was much bigger too! From Bangkok to Hat Yai even in the cheap seats the train crew handed out a thin blanket and had simple snacks. On the Malaysia portion no free food but the food car was cheap. I used the first class seats from Butterworth (near Penang) to Singapore.
I used the late evening train out of Bangkok, traveled all night and got to Hat Yai in the afternoon. Some delays due to flooded tracks so the train went slower. A couple spots you can use for a hotel stopover are Hat Yai Thailand and Butterworth (or Penang) for your room. In Hat Yai the Kings Hotel is cheap and only a short walk from the train station. (I had been to Hat Yai previously.) I used a taxi and van with a friend from Hat Yai to Butterworth to save time and picked up the train again at Butterworth in the morning around 7 a.m. I used a hotel in Butterworth just a short taxi ride away from that train station. Figure on around 12 or 13 hours just from Butterworth to Singapore.
Actually, cheaper to fly from Vientiane to KL, then take a bus to Singapore.
You could find Airasia flights out of Vientiane to KL and from there flight to Singapore and you might get it damn cheap if you book early enough. If you insist on crossing border by road you can take comfortable bus leaving KL in the morning and arriving in Singapore by afternoon.
Since you showed some interest in Indonesia, I suggest you must go to Jogjakarta in Central Java and may be to Bali too. These two places are good tourist destinations and Indonesia is quite cheap too. Airasia flies to all these places and very cheap if you book early. look for their website and check for prices.
In a world with no Visas, I won't even think about this... anyway the Vientiene to KL plane sounds most practical.
The winter is driving me crazy. I have been to Southeast Asia so many times, so I hope I can go elsewhere to escape the chilling weather. Yes, Indonesia is my main motivation... But I heard from a few people, Medan and that city you can cross from Melaka are not interesting places. I want to go to Bali, but it's too far away... Anyway, thanks... I'm gonna have to think of another trip... But this is an option.

I wish I kept records... I have been to Hatyai in 2008, but I'll need to sit in a Bodhi tree to trace back my journey. I probably did a Phukhet to Hatyai and to Butterworth... I love the sound of it, Butterworth.
I had been to Jogjakarta with family and we all just loved the place. We stayed there for four nights right on the Malioboro street in hotel Meribabu and it was very comfortable. We went to see Borobudur ( worlds biggest buddist temple) and the majestic Prambanan (Biggest hindu temple in Indonesia) and it was worth. We also went up the volcano Mt. Merapi on the same day we went to Borobudur and Prambanan. One day we went to the nearby city Surakarta( solo) and saw the palace of the sultan there. We saw the Ramayan Ballet which was enjoyed by my daughter a lot since she herself is a professional bharathanatyam dancer. I have been recomending Jogjakarta to many people as it could be called the cultural capital of Indonesia and I would rate it higher than Bali in my view.
Anyway, I'm not going to Singapore anymore... But the Indonesia option is there...
