Hi
In February I am leaving for a 3 month trip around the world. As I am very interested in photography, I decided to take my DSLR (canon 400d).
As I will be traveling with only a backpack I really need to minimize the weight and therefore I want to take only one lens.
At first I thought I wanted something in the 18-200mm range, but then I realized that I am a lot more interested in something that will manage well in low light. Therefore I have looked a bit at the 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC Macro, but then again the reviews are very up and down. I like to shoot details, people and landscapes. Maybe a wide angle lens would be good, but then again those go fast up in price.
Hello Synne,
I think if you want to bring one lens only I would go with a 17-55 f/2 or 2.8. This will cover most of your needs. If you have place for one more lens I would take a 80-200 f/2.
I am leaving for 10 days in Jan to go to death valley national park and I am taking only 2 lenses.
Good luck and send me a few pics!

Synne,
You've a good basis for great travel photos. I travel a lot and mostly use a Canon 17-85mm on my 40D. Great range of views and fast enough for nearly all situations. I think you'll have a tough time finding an reasonably priced digital lens with a good telescopic factor though. You're better off using the on camera flash or buying an inexpensive shoe mount flash for the few times you'll really need it. Also consider taking a small tripod or monopod (which can also serve as a hiking stick) for low light situations.

Thanks, I think I will go for something like 17-55 f/2, as I don't need the zoom to often
The Tamron 17-50 f/2,8 you should also check. Costs half then the Canons 17-55 and is more or less on same level.

Thanks! I have looked the tamron up and it looks great!
