Roxyftw has indicated that this thread is about Visas (Australia)
i cant help you re backpacking tips as it will be a first for me in a few weeks time, although my working visa was processed within a day so hopefully you wont have to wait too long.
As for the rest, my approach is book a flight and your first accomodation and make the rest up from there, whether thats correct or not im sure experienced travellers will say!
heya jamie, thanks for the advice on the visa it's much appreciated dude cool yeh that was my basic idea so far too. i was just gonna get over and go from there good luck on your trip!!
Hey Roxy :-)
When are you planning on coming to Aus? I've been here for three months now and my plans have changed so much, so I wouldn't worry about making definite plans!
Also, I would think about the weather when you're planning where to go..
I was originally going to Cairns in Jan and heading down to Melb for July, but after talking to Australians they all told me Cairns in Jan is monsoon and Melb in July is cold, so now I'm heading down to Melb and up to Cairns, so I'm going with the weather :-)
With my TFN, I just applied online.. you need an Australian address to use though. It only took about a week or two to come through.
I hate to say it, but I found getting work quite hard! Maybe that's because of the area I was looking, I'm not sure.. but I found that a lot of places won't hire travellers because they think you're just going to up and leave and any time, I didn't try call centres though and I think a lot of people get jobs there. I did manage to find a job in shop, I probably handed out around 75 CV's, and heard back from 3 places.. and my CV is quite good for my age (18)..
I think my visa took about a week or two for my official confirmation
hope that helps x
If you're from the UK then the 'cold' probably won't be so bad in Melbourne, I'm Australian and I wouldn't head to Cairns in Jan, I hate the heat but it's not just the 35 degree heat but the humidity that sucks. Melbourne is my absolute favourite place and I've been everywhere in Aus, except Perth. So I'd definitely suggest heading there, May/June is a good time, although Melbourne weather is all over the place. The hostels there are great as well.
The easiest to get a tfn would be online with the ATO (Australian Taxation Office), yeah, better than having to find an Office.
Getting jobs are hard for even Aussies, although I think our employment rate isn't as bad as the rest of the world. I just wouldn't be picky if I were you.
