Why don't you book a hostel in one of the beach suburbs (Bondi/Coogee/Manly) and then find more permanent accom after that??
Or there is a big backpackers near Central Station in the city, which is handy for transport and getting around.

Sydney is one of "the places to be" on New Year's Eve. You have possibly seen the massive fireworks displays on TV as the clock strikes midnight there?
Because of that all accommodation prices go up and rooms fill up. I had a look on lowcostholidays and prices start from around £90 a night, 2nd Jan.
Now if you were to get a short connecting flight to say Brisbane and spend some days there till the fuss dies over, prices start from around £30 a night, 2nd Jan.
