Please help!

Hello all,

I don't know the area that well, but I was in Luang Prabang this time last year. If you're a backpacker in LP, the best place to find a good room is near the Post Office on the main drag. Walk one block from the PO and you'll find Joma Bakery (turn the corner) and you'll find all the cheaper places. I stayed at Souksavat Guest House for $12. - a very clean/nice/friendly little place. Eat at one of the Night Market buffets - really good/fresh food and cheap. Best pizza is at the Scandinavian Bakery (main drag), and the Indian place across the street is very good. Use the website for really good detailed maps of places in Laos. Hobo Maps also list travel information such as bus, boat and airline schedules, but I seriously doubt they're up-to-the-minute accurate?

Sorry, but I can't help you with surface transport - I flew in and out with Vietnam Airlines, but I understand the local buses are pretty bad. Don't miss the waterfalls near LP - good swimming (fish nibble on your feet). The Mekong has been quite low (preventing some boat travel in the dry season) the past few years due to Mother China's diversion and dams.

I usually use Seoul as a transit point too (Asiana is my favorite airline), and I once spent 27 hours in the City in winter -burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! that place is freezing, but friendly (I find the Koreans a bit too reserved). I booked ahead with the (free) Goodwill Guides and had an excellent senior guide who showed me around - you need to reserve at least a month ahead. Korea is also considerably more pricey than SEA!
