travelling north america for three weeks

Two things you should know--
(1) booking internal flights on the cheap usually requires a minimum of 2 to 3 weeks advance notice in order to get the cheapest flights. Flying on either Friday or Sunday night or Monday morning will be the most difficult, since that's when most people book their vacation flights--so book those earlier--or try to fly on different days. book on southwest, or else try a site like kayak or momondo; and
(2) the most important sports in September in the US are American football and baseball--our two most popular sports--and these are both extremely popular (and fairly widely available) in September--(actually the single busiest sports month of the year here in the states). Baseball games occur almost everyday during the month (although sometimes not on Mondays or Thursdays--while football games are normally on Saturday (college) or Sunday (professional). College baseball is not nearly as popular as professional baseball, while college football is probably even more popular than professional football (odd, I know--but that's how it is)

For information on football schedules check the following two sites:
http://espn.go.com/college-football/teams
http://www.nfl.com/schedules?seasonType=POST#Week
(note: the schedules for next September are still being finalized--and they will probably be released only around March or April of these year)--if you go to these sites, though, you will get an idea of how many games get played each year

Baseball schedules (professional) are already released and may be found here:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/?tcid=mm_mlb_schedule#date=09/01/2012

Generally the single-game tickets won't go on sale to the public until around March 1st--since they try to sell season tickets first (but it varies by team--and some teams will sell out many of their tickets (like the NY Yankees, Boston, Philadelphia and San Francisco)--although most will not)

Our soccer season (what you call football) also runs during the period. For information on this check the following two sites:
http://www.mlssoccer.com/
(us internal soccer league)

http://www.ussoccer.com/
(us national teams--men and womens)

P.S. I'm a little surprised you are visiting Detroit--since the town itself is not very scenic--although once you get out of town into cities like Pontiac, then it is a lot nicer.

I swear by for domestic travel in the USA - good prices and no change fees

Yes, why Detroit? (hardly America's best) September is a great month here - best month of all for weather in San Francisco. It's all about American football in September. Remember that public transport here is very poor when compared to the UK - you will need a car in most of California outside of SF.

Thanks for a very helpful response. I have since found out about the football and the baseball and we are intending to go see the Yankees on the 2nd! Looking at the calendar, like you say they play nearly every day! Is it the same squad of players every day? Obviously being English I haven't got a scooby doo about baseball! How long can 1 day last? From the destinations mentioned where would u say is the best place to see an American football game?

We are interested in visiting Detroit in the hope if finding some cool music, a house/techno night! Then hopefully listen to some jazz in Chicago!

Thanks a lot

Morgan

For music head to Nashville, Tennessee

Well if you are looking to save a bit of money, I'd tell you to do your baseball either in Chicago (go to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs) in one of the oldest and most historic stadiums in the game, or In New York go see the Mets rather than the Yankees. Neither of those teams are very good and you'll be able to get tickets even last minute-ish often for less than face value.

I'll write bit more when I have a moment.

and yes it's more or less the same squad of players every day. And I'd probably agree for music head to Nashville or New Orleans. Detroit isn't high on the list of American cities to visit.

as to getting cheap flights - (as much as I hate to promote it) try the Bing price predictor as to when the best time/price will be available.

Ideally try to miss the labor day weekend (the first weekend in September) as it's officially considered the last weekend of summer and huge amounts of people are traveling which drives up prices on tickets and accommodations.

If you have specific NY questions feel free to drop me a line.
