safety advice for girls?

Hey everybody!
I'll be leaving in 5 days for my first round the world trip. I'm super excited but at the same time slightly anxious about safety issues,
so if any girls around here have travelled the world solo and have some advice or experience to share, I'd be really happy to read it!
Thanks
Maya.

Maya..I know a girl who travelled most of the Europe alone..She faced some problems but while travelling..we must ready to face such things. When you finish your travel..you will obviously feel proud for what you have done.

Hi Maya!
I'm traveling by myself right now! I was just in India, I went to Goa, Bombay, Delhi, Jaipur, Amritsar and Agra. Not sure if you're headed there, but it was really amazing! Sometimes it was scary as a solo female and I felt vulnerable at times but if you keep a smart head you will find that most of the people in India are very kind and welcoming. If you are going to be traveling by train, book in advance because they sell out! If you are traveling by bus, don't make the mistake I made and make sure you book an a/c bus! Otherwise you will be in for a cold ride! Sometimes I didn't want to do things because I was alone but you have to push through that and remember that this is the opportunity of a lifetime so don't pass anything up!

Now I'm in Nepal and then heading to Thailand and hopefully more of southeast Asia. Let me now if you have questions! Good luck and have fun!

Hi Maya,
You're already on your way so I guess there's no use suggesting personal alarms or some such (not that I use these), but my biggest recommendation is common sense.

I normally travel on my own and I prefer it, but I make sure that I take care of myself the same as I would at home - I wouldn't walk down dark alleys at night on my own at home, so why start when in a foreign country? I also try to "blend in" as much as possible, this can be difficult in some areas as a white girl with an obvious and professional-looking camera kit, but I try where possible to dress and act like a local.

It might be a little late for you now but there's a great tip in TP's this month: use a doorstop to keep your "private" room private.

Sometimes you will find averting your eyes and keeping to yourself can help you out of some untoward situations, but always keep your wits about you and remember to enjoy the experience!

Kellie
