PCH route 6th sep to 13th sep

Hi my name is laura i am 21 and i fly to san fran on the 5th of sep with my boyfriend and stay overnight, the following day i would like to travel the pacific coast highway route down to la with your help.

What a waste, going to SF, and immediately leaving for LA! Why not stay a few days, and enjoy the best city in the USA? Google Maps works very well + the library has all sorts of info on California these days.

we are going to stay for 2days in san fran and then travel down to LA as we fly out to las vegas on the 14th only wanting to spend a day or two in LA. what i am asking is suggestions of places to stay on the pch route such as santa cruz, monterey ? would these be good places to stay for someone my age ?

thanks laura

Yes, Santa Cruz is a very young crowd due to the college, UCSC, and a surfing mecca as well (my nephew lives there). Monterey Peninsula (Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel) is probably the most beautiful area on the coast - Pebble Beach and other golf courses are world famous. Monterey Aquarium is the finest of it's type in the world. If you go in August you would be able to see the Garlic Festival in Gilroy nearby, and the whole area and Salinas are highly agricultural (the lettuce capital of N. America). Just south of Carmel is Point Lobos State Park - a world famous marine reserve. Big Sur is just south of the park - awesome views over the Pacific, and Highway #1 is probably the most picturesque highway in the world. I suggest you do not rush through!

Further down Highway #1 is Hearst Castle - where the movie stars of yesteryear played - America's only real castle - now another state park.

My suggestion is that you do not attempt travel in this area on a weekend - especially around Monterey Peninsula (the road is narrow and traffic can be overwhelming).

Really the best of California is SF and the Coast - don't forget the areas north of SF - the Sonoma and Marin coastal areas are equally beautiful (not quite as crowded either).
