What is the travel industry missing?

Hi,

A UK survey in the UK in 2008 showed that half of the population are single. Yet if you book a holiday with a travel company and are single, you will face steep surcharges, even paying double though they only get one seat on a flight.

Previously many single people did not go abroad because of this reason but now they can do it all themselves at a reasonable price. With the help of travel forums like this.

Holiday companies have over the decades lost untold millions of holiday makers because of their contempt for single travellers, and they are continuing to do so.

The travel industry is inflexible on holidays too so people come to places like this and tailor make their own holidays. They are stuck in 1960.

That's great info Cyberia, and I appreciate you sharing it! I didn't realize this issue and am wondering how it can be remedied.

Any suggestions?

Also, if you have a link to more information please feel free to share it with me. Thanks again!

I was going to suggest the exact same thing. Some way to make traveling single not have a huge single supplement and not requiring rooming with a stranger to get a decent price. Cruises are the worst offenders. Maybe some kind of group buying power or deals for singles site?

Some places, like Europe, Thailand and Australia, have great tourist infrastructure. But some areas are just beginning to open up to tourism (in the former Soviet Union, and Africa, for example). Travel companies could do a lot more to help those countries develop their tourism industry, and help tourists interested in visiting those countries.

i would say a skyscanner sort of system but one which allows any means.

so for example it will give you the cheapest price and cheapest method of getting somewhere. and something which combines that with say travellerspoint map, so it will show you where you are going where you are staying where, what route the costs what visas etc. so basically all the planning and research you have to do can be done in one single place.

This is a pretty cool website here! Thank you for sharing this!

laurim. I have been on a few cruises but would have been on more were it not for the large supplements. One cruise they actually wanted more than the price for a couple than for someone on their own, despite just one seat on the plane.

As I said to them, why don't they put on their brochure: "No singles or dogs allowed."

Contempt! lol Its simple economics. Since hotel rooms are built to accommodate a minimum of two people, why would a single person get it for less than what two have to pay? Accommodating for one traveler is going to always be less cost effective than for two or more. No matter whether its the hotel, the food or the transportation.
