Last minute thing, Travelling to Thailand on my own.. No plan's, Where to start?
Begin my trip in Phuket or Bangkok.. recomendation's please...
Will be leaving withing next week and a half!
Not the best time to go. I just had a look at the short range weather forecast and it's thunder and rain now and the same into next week. Much of Asia is the same this time of year. Hopefully a dry spell will open up.
At least in Bangkok you can be undercover, in malls and other places. A beach is lousy in wet weather.
Keep an eye on the weather and if things brighten up, fly or bus to somewhere. Even up north to Chiang Mai.
You could do some sight seeing like the Grand Palace, Vimanmek Palace, Ayutthaya, Bridge over River Kwai, even pop into Safari World in Bangkok.

well, i have never been phuket but i went to Bangkok first then moved up to South part, chaigmai with train. chaigmai is a cold place with mountains and forests and zoo and lots of nautral stuffs. u can do some treking if u like to be tough a bit in the forest. lots of travel agents over there too. In Bangkok, u can go to KaungSan road, there are lots travel agency and a lot of foreigners there in the road, having lots hotel and restaurant there. i think u will find some sources there.

How long is this holiday for? What is your budget like?
Why Phuket? It is the most expensive beach area in Thailand. Even Bangkok has cheaper hotels than Phuket. Local transportation in Bangkok is very cheap. Compared to what you have to pay in Phuket it is almost free!
Single male. Not a teenager. Start in Bangkok with a round trip ticket. Round trip from UK on major airlines is usually cheaper than 2 one way flights. Stay in the Sukhumvit Road (Nana) area for a while. Take some tours that you can get through local travel agencies on short notice. In this area you have nightlife, hotels in all price ranges, restaurants you can walk to, malls, etc. You also have use of the Skytrain. (Skytrain is an overhead rail service.) Meter taxis in Bangkok are reasonably priced if you do not bargain the cost and just use the meter!
How much time you have determines where you go and to how many places.
Near to Bangkok (2 hours by bus) is Pattaya. Beach is not as good as Phuket but the weather right now is better. Hotels have pools you can use if you want to get wet. Beach is no good at Pattaya for swimming but okay for nightlife, shopping, cheap restaurants even supermarkets and movie theaters. Local transportation is only 10 baht using baht bus rides. Hotels in Pattaya are cheaper than Bangkok! If you do not care for Pattaya you can go back to Bangkok for peanuts and fly to Phuket anyway. Depends on how much money and how much time you have!
If you need hotel advice also include how much per night you want to spend on a room.

hi, i am going to start in bangkok now, have decided, 26 year old male, travelling alone.
my budget is roughly £1400 uk. have not finalised flights yet, seperate money aside for that.
did'nt realise round trip was cheaper, was does round trip actually entail?

Round trip means the city you fly to you also fly back home from! You have tickets to and from this the same city. You may have intermediate stops but they do not count. Usually when you book a flight from the airline company the choices you get are one way or round trip. If you fly to Bangkok and then fly home from Phuket - you may pay more than flying to and from Bangkok. Local flights or bus rides within Thailand are cheap so it is easy to return to Bangkok again. But do the math first.
Flying back home from Bangkok means you can do any souvenir shopping at the last minute. Tourists flying often stay in Bangkok at first and during that time they book flights or rides to other cities. Tourists from cold countries may also unload winter clothing in the first hotel they stay at in Bangkok and just use the same place for a final night or two before they fly home and reclaim their winter things.
Keep the cost of your flights separate from what you intend to spend for hotels, food and entertainment in Thailand. After paying for flights divide your available cash by the number of days you will be in Thailand to get a daily budget. Hotels are your biggest expense unless you spend loads of money drinking and eat at swanky places only. A room with air and private toilet starts around 600 baht in Bangkok. This is a no frills, not too pretty looking place but the rooms are okay. The more you spend the better the place. But millions and millions of tourists stay in places 1000 baht and below and are quite happy doing it.
You can not just show up in Thailand and stay as long as you want. From the UK, at Suvarnabhumi, you will get a free Tourist Exemption stamp in your passport allowing you to stay in country for 30 days. Longer periods you must pay for a visa.

I've never quite understood why Phuket is so well known and popular to first time backpackers to Thailand. I guess since it's the busiest tourist center in Thailand, that's where the money is spent on tourism advertising, and people in Europe know about it.
Phuket is ideal for wealthy families, honeymooners, or older tourists who just want a beach vacation with all the conveniences at their doorstep. Basically, they want Mediterranean or Caribbean resorts, but be able to say they've been to Asia. But for a 26-year old solo backpacker? There are so many nicer, cheaper, and far more interesting places to go in Thailand.
Do some research on Koh Phagnan, Koh Tao, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi or Krabi. I suspect you'll find these places more suited to your situation.
Thailand is a friendly country, Bangkok is also a good choice, a bit like riding elephants.Religion and culture in Thailand is also very deep
