I would recommend starting in the North Island in Auckland. Auckland is huge, so staying central is probably the best idea. There is the skytower, that has a casino, resturants, and you can bungee jump from the top. You can catch a ferry to Waiheke Island to a vineyard for lunch which is a nice day trip.
Drive from Auckland to Rotorua . This city has lots of thermal activity and is a big tourist town. The luge and Kiwi Valley are my favourite attractions here. 3 days here should be enough to look around. Drive from Rotorua to Taupo. Taupo has our biggest lake, and has bungee jumping and some of the adventure activities. Jet boating at Huka Falls (NZ biggest waterfall) was my favourite here. Close to Taupo there are mountains with snow for skiing (I would probably wait till Queenstown for this, unless you want to go twice).
Wellington is our capital city. Probably best to fly from Taupo to Wellington. Wellington has good public transport so once you are at the airport you can bus into the city. Once in the city you can walk everywhere you need to go. Te Papa museum, and the Cable car trip were my favourites here.
There is a ferry from Wellington to the South Island, or you can fly. Queenstown is my favourite South Island city, it has lots of adventure activities and is very touristy. There will be snow in Queenstown so you could go skiing or snow boarding. Milford Sound is amazing but is a short flight from Queenstown (can be expensive so will depend on your budget). Other citys to see are Dunedin, and Christchurch, both are nice. Some of Christchurch is still being rebuilt due to the big earthquake we had a few years ago.
There are beautiful beaches all around NZ, because you are coming in winter I have not mentioned them. Remember to pack warm clothes for August, it will be cold!
The cost of accommodation varies depending on the citys. I usually expect to spend $130 a night on accomodation, and thats for an average studio style room. The more you spend the nicer it will be. I am unsure of car rental costs. Bungee is around $200 i think (haven't done it). It will be too cold for rafting in August.
