From Sliema it's a nice walk along the promenade to Valletta. It has a main street, a huge church with an ornate floor (St John) and at the other end, the Malta Experience.
There is Medina, the walled silent city, a bus ride away. It has a natural history museum inside of it, A catacombs at the back and a small mosaic, etc museum to the side.
Take a bus to the north of the island fairly early one morning and get a ferry to Gozo, and a bus to Victoria (small museum) where you can get another bus elsewhere, Xlendi or whatever.
Valletta has a big Sunday market which is worth a look in. Diving is available in places on Malta and Gozo.
There is the "Popeye" village up north. Not really much in the way of beaches.

One November afternoon when I was there and it rained like the Flood, I popped into an English cinema in Sliema (don't know if it's still there) and saw an English film.
Buses will get you around the island but they do tend to fill up.
Just to add a couple of things.
Transport is pretty cheap in Malta. The bus station in Valletta is the hub for visiting all parts of the island. The Sliema - Valletta ferry is also cheap and worth taking.
If you are into archeology, there are lots of remains in surprisingly good condition.
The hypogeum - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypogeum_of_%C4%A6al-Saflieni - needs a reservation, but is a must see.
The The Ggantija megalithic temple complex on Gozo - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C4%A0gantija - is older than the pyramids and largely intact.

So based on your experiences would you both prefer Valleta over Sliema?

I was there last year. I loved it and I am going to go this year as well :-D
Valleta is a capital and it is worth seeing but it is better to stay in Sliema. Valletta is beautiful but there are banks, companies, etc. but for staying as a turist I would prefer Sliema where I had an appartment.
It is easy to get everywhere by bus from Sliema and Valleta as well. Sliema is closer to St. Julians - place with pubs, discos and there is the center of the nightlife of Malta :-) So it will be easy to get back to your apartment after a crazy night in St. Julians when you stay in sliema.
And the places I would recommend are also Rabat, Azure Window (on Gozo), Vittoriosa, Valletta, Blue Lagoon (you cen get there from the ferry terminal on Malta).

Hey. You can do Valletta in a day or two (if you go into lots of museums and palaces. There's a lot to see and its a city full of history. For a great view walk to either side of the city. You can do it from one side to the other in 30 to 45 mins (a bit hilly in some places). on one side you'll see sliema on the other you'll see the three cities. One of them - Vittorisa - is worth a visit. Go to Mdina (Medina) you wont need a day. Try to leave a day or two for the island of Gozo. Golden Bay and Ghadira Bay are worth a dip too. Sliema adn St Julian's are great for bars and restaurants. Buses are really cheap - €2 a day. Maybe you can also go to Wied iz- Zurrieq for a couple of hours and get a boat to the caves. Awesome and doable in half a day.

You can go to Valetta since it's a photographer's mine, filled with a perfect grid of streets, colorful balconies, retro charm, and the incredible views from the Upper Barakka Gardens. You can visit the Old Prison and Citadella Sights of Gozo. Located in Victoria’s citadel, the prison is still filled with etchings of boats and hands carved by prisoners centuries ago. Walk the waterfront from St. Julians to Sliema and Gzira. Not only will you work off the pastizzi, this is THE place to see and be seen in the early evening.
