You're not going to find anything cheaper than 1500. (just too much demand in the peak summer travel period)
look at China Southern Airlines or go to a local travel agent in Bangkok (the cheapest route is normally BKK-LAX-BKK)

My buddy traveled from Seattle to BKK RT for $1,200 in early January, which is peak tourism here and often peak travel around the world, so I suspect it could drop well below $1,500. His gf also bought a flight 1 week in advance RT out of JFK in Feb. for $1,400 (I know that isn't peak by any means, but 1 week in advance).
Another idea is standby: do you know how exactly I go about standby? How do I get through security w/o a boarding pass?

Why does it have to be during the absolutely peak season--are you nuts?
If you were to book even in mid-June you could get to Seattle RT via Vancouver with a bus for the last 50 miles for about $1100 or so? But to have to travel in late July to early August will cost you the $1,500. Next time pick a different time to come--oh, and I should mention that the weather is much better in the USA in mid-June than in July and August, when it will be way to hot in most of the country.
I am from the US, lived in the US for 20+ years. The timing is due to an event on late July, and a family reunion in early August. I know it hasn't worked out favorably in terms of traveling there, but I can't change that fact. Cheers for your info!

Those days of standby travel are gone, sorry. Today the airlines are much more efficient about filling their seats with the help of computers connected to the complex travel networks - empty seats today are quite rare.
