Vietnam (August '13)

Hi there.

Hi Frodeliciouz,
I am from HCMC in Vietnam.
There are lots of places where you can visit in Vietnam.
If you want to travel anywhere you can share with me.
I welcome to share with you!

[ , no personal details please. ]

I initially earmarked the train from Hoi An to Hue because it is a very scenic train ride. After further research I replaced that with taking an Easyrider bike ride. Research, it may be something that would interest you guys. But at the end of the day, nothing wrong with the train ride, just make sure you book your seats on the right side (for the views).

I've researched all of my (future) itinerary accessing info from the internet. It's all there, you just have to look.

Good luck.

I remember my backpacking days to Norway many years ago. Oslo, Bergen, fiords etc. Beautiful country though a tad expensive for a poor Aussie lol

Thanks for the tip. We've done some research so we're well-prepared before we go. Don't want to be there for 14 days and just get stuck with the tourist traps.

And yeah, haha, Norway is beautiful but it comes with a price.

Really bad bad bad idea to spend so much time on VN trains (Vietnam Air is the way to go - esp for such a short time).

VN in August is both very hot and very WET!

Hi, I went to Vietnam a while ago but a stand out for me was Quy Nonh. It was a tiny town on the coast, hardly any tourists (might have changed now) but it was great. Also watch out for overnight busses, went on one and had to have someone stay up to make sure our stuff wasnt taken!

Thanks for the advice. Most of the people I've spoken to recommend train over air planes, as we want to stop by different places and catch some of the scenery. And the trains got AC as well, so it's reasonably comfortable - at least so I've heard.

Does anybody know how the weather differences are in north vs south in August?

Travel to Vietnam in Aug isnot a good idea at all. The summer weather is sooo hot esp with the Westerns. There is no big difference between the north and the south in Aug. Both are so hot, but the south has rain in the afternoon and the evening is a little bit cooler than the north (which is hot and wet).

The trains got AC but very noisy and slow, 30hrs for about 1100km from Saigon to Hanoi. but worth for travelers to try as the scenery along the way is beautiful. You should fly from HCM to Hue then take the train back with such a short time. The highlights are Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang (best beach in Vietnam), Mui Ne (with cute beach and sand dunes), Phu Quoc island, Mekong Delta (very interesting with fresh tropical fruits and boat rides) ... The north is also famous with Halong Bay (magnificent bay view) and Sapa(cool even in summer with many ethnic people, suitable for trekking, climbing..).

If you need any further information, pls ask and I will help if I can coz I am Vietnamese,

"And the trains got AC as well, so it's reasonably comfortable - at least so I've heard"

If you call sleeping with roaches comfortable, go for it! I would call a one way trip via train less than comfortable/reasonable, but round trip in a short 2-week trip is just plain nuts! Do yourself a favor and book one way on Vietnam Air. I know this country fairly well by now - been there 5 times.

(I have been on the wonderful/clean trains in Norway, and those of Vietnam are not even in the same category)

I got the sleeper train from Hanoi to Hue and it was really comfortable, very clean and not a roach in sight! I'm not sure how this compares with trains on other routes though. I took the bus for the rest of my trip through Vietnam, apart from one flight between Danang and Nha Trang.
