Can any1 suggest any good hotels/hostels please? I'm going there 4 a week the end of August and there seems 2 much choice on hostel bookers

They are pretty much of a sameness, allowing that you get what you pay for. It's just a matter of getting somewhere fairly central.
Somewhere like Ho Chi Minh has a small hotel district with everything you need there. The airport bus takes you there, and suddenly all the tourists get off. It's one stop after the bus station stop.
I stayed Hotel 68 which was just around the corner from where the bus stops. As well as good reviews, it has some horrible reviews which I cannot understand unless these people were bitter about something since they were undeserved.

I suggest you use the 'accommodation' option top of this page. Choose VN, then the cities you plan on visiting. Top rated hotels/hostel are listed first. in HaNoi was top rated by TP members. Then I always go over to tripadvisor and check what others have to say as well. This will give you an idea of what is available in your price range.
Here is what I suggest you do. Book your first nite if you are not comfortable with just winging it. I have been to VN 5 times, so I wing it. But you may like knowing where you are staying first nite. Reserve a high rated room if that is the case. If you land in HAN, pick a room in the Old Quarter. Best place to stay IMO. Take a share van to the Old Quarter. If you land in HCM, take a share taxi to the Pham Ngu Lao section of HCM. This is where the backpackers stay. has info on mini-hotel alley in HCM. Plenty of cheap options close by. I suggest you use the bus system to travel around VN, Cheapest, most convenient way to get around. will argue that the train is safer. True, many fewer deaths with train travel. But you do have to book several days in advance for each leg and figure double what the bus costs. Your choice.
There are at least 4 companies running the open tour. Each stay at certain hotels in each city. Sinh Cafe is the best and most of their hotels run in the $30+ range. Hanh Cafe stays at lower cost hotels, say $10+. You do not have to stay where they stop. There will be plenty of moto guys ready to take you to a cheaper option.
