Travelling by train/bus in Sweden is not too expensive, especially when you book in advance (for example train/bus trips over a stretch of 600 km for app. 300 SEK, ~33 EUR). In this case I'd recommend checking several websites for public transportation and book as soon as you know when you could travel, this is mainly for the longer distances.

Some of the popular hiking regions, such as Abisko National Park, start of the Kungsleden, can be reached by train.
Which regions in Finland/Sweden/Norway do you plan to cover? And also, do you have any ideas on whether you plan to go camping or stay in hostels/cabins? Costs are significantly lower for camping.

Page for Finnish railways is vr.fi trains and buses are not overly cheap, 600km is maybe 80€, but student gets 50% discount. Hitchiking is also relatively cheap and safe option in Finland, although in April it can still be pretty cold
I didn't find Finland to be overly expensive, especially compared to Western Europe. Prices were about the same as in Canada.
There is a high speed ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia. It's just 1-2 hours, and makes a nice daytrip. I highly recommend it, as Tallinn's Old City is like something out of a fairy tale.
There are also ferries from Helsinki to Stockholm, Sweden. They might be a bit pricey, but maybe you can get an economy ticket. Ferries are a nice change from trains and buses, and Helsinki harbour is gorgeous, with many small, wooded islands.

We spent 4 months traveling round Europe but had our own car and camped so not sure about the cost of trains/coaches.
Scandanavia food wise is very expensive and as you get closer to the Arctic Circle buying vegetables are very hard to find and when you can it's unbelievably expensive. Eating out is the same so if you can I would use hostels so you can at least do your own cooking.
Norway is an amazing country you will have a wonderful time.
