Hello, I will be travelling alone to Paris, Madrid, Porto and Faro this coming December. I'm 23 and a female. Is it safe for me to go to these places alone? Hope you guys could help me on this.
Europe is a very safe place in general. I am sure anything bad won't happen to you. Just follow your instincts and also some basic safety rules, like don't go to the streets, where anybody isn't walking during the night.

Last January I visited Madrid. I (Mom) stayed with my two daughers at the Regina hotel. Great place. We felt completely safe at all times. Keep valuables protected. The poor economic situation has resulted in an increase in pick-pockets. We walked everywhere, using the walking tours in a travel book. Museums were fabulous and night life is always alive (people stay up late because they take naps). Dinner served very late (in comparison to my native US).
My 20 year old daughter travelled with a friend to Paris during the summer. They also felt completely safe. Make sure the hotel you choose is in a safe area.

Hello! Travellers should always keep their staff closely. The streets are not the only place a man can be robber. A few years ago we were staying in a hotel in Madrid and while we were having breakfast a woman was robbed. Someone has entered the room where breakfast was served and has taken her bag. Of course she should't have left it unsupervised but sometimes people think that nothing can happen for a few second. Well it can. So just be careful As far as Paris is concerned me and my family went there last May. We felt absolutely secure. Of course we were warned about the pick-pockets and were paying attention to our belongings. The city is just amazing, We were walking at night and it was full of life! There are so many places worth visiting there!
You will be travelling to some really great cities. So have a nice and safe trip.
I have travelled by myself in all the cities you mentioned and i never felt insecurity or danger in any of them. In general, western europe is a safe place for solo women travellers
Like in any big city, try to avoid walking alone in empty streets at night. In Paris, Madrid and Porto you'll surely find a lot of people sleeping in the streets (this is happening more and more due to the economical crisis) but in most cases they aren't dangerous at all. Sometimes people try to sell you drugs, but just avoid them or say no, and they'll leave you in peace!
And of course, like in any other place in the world, keep an eye and a hand in your belongings when riding public transportation (especially at rush hours).
