Hey guys,

I'm also flying out to Sydney soon, I arrive on the 6th Jan and I'm staying at wake up. Anybody around that wants to meet up and grab a drink or two, feel free to give me a shout

Dan x

I'm already here, but if anyone wants a guide, drink or any information/help when they arrive, just hit me up. I can understand the apprehension going it alone as I've been here 4 weeks also on my own.

I didn't stay in hostels, so can't really help on that front, but I did jump straight in at the deep end into flats/apartments all throughout the city. I've been here a month and have stayed south by the airport, inner west (Newtown), inner Sydney (surry hills), and currently slightly further east in Paddington, so can help in those areas and everything else that comes with getting around, shopping, food, phone (go for Optus $2 days if you need data, but NOT If you want to text or ring home, it's Australia only calls and texts - great for whatsapp, iMessage, Skype or Facebook though), bank (go for NAB, they set my account up in 10 minutes!) etc.

If you're staying in hostels though I'm sure you'll meet people the instant you arrive, I wouldn't be nervous about flying it solo if you're getting yourself straight into an environment where 90% of the people there have the same feelings! I wish I'd done a week in a hostel just to meet a few people, but think I've learnt a whole bunch more in my 4 weeks renting about the city itself (outside of the tourist areas and bars...), it's people and general life here than I would have in a hostel.

I couldn't count the number of times I've been walking around the harbour or botanic gardens and seen someone slightly nervous, on there own snapping away. A quick hey, want me to take a picture of you and fancy a buddy for the afternoon conversation and they feel better about being here alone, and so do you. You can spot them a mile off (the solo travelers) and they're probably thinking the same thing you are. Some say no, but hey that's cool, you'll never see them again!

One thing I will say is that getting around is seriously easy. Just get google maps on your phone and fall back to that if you ever find yourself lost (but that's half the fun right!), but buses and trains are regular and simple.
