Hey,
The absolute minimum to take (to be eligible for the WHV in the first place, assuming we're talking about the Australia WHV here, and not the New Zealand one) is AUD $5000. For your 'average' frugal backpacker, staying in dorm rooms, buying supermarket food to cook their own meals, and travelling by public transport, that amount of money lasts them about 2 months. There certainly are people who manage to get by on less, but they're the exceptions. Much more common is for new travellers to go out at night a couple of times, do some activities, and blow through 2-3 times that much money every day without realizing it.
I'd aim for at least double that AUD $5000 to have a comfortable buffer. That way you could travel for two months to get a feel for things, pick a nice place that you'd actually like to stay at for a longer time, and then start working there - with still a decent amount of money saved up for unforeseen opportunities, and to tide you over while actually finding that job, and waiting for the first paycheck.
Hey Jade
I arrived in Aus 1 month ago, my advice bring every penny you have. when you arrive your still in "holiday mode" where money isnt an option. like you i travelled around did the east coast in 4 weeks then flew back to sydney to work. i did everything i wanted to do, drank every night and didnt cook once (ooops!) i blew 3000aud in 4 weeks. Just try and snap out of the holiday mode quickly as you soon panic when you look at your bank balance and realise SHIT. but honestly it was worth every penny and whats abit of work when you loved every minute all im doing now is working to plan the next adventure.
enjoy aus youll love every minute xx
Hey Jordan what kind of job have you got ? Is it easy to find ?
Some good advice here for sure, first time out i'd definately agree you want at least $5000 and if you want to buy a car budget at least $3000 on top of that! money goes real quick plus the exchange rate is not great still but once you start earning aussie dollars that'll no longer be a problem.
After paying for my flight and my first three weeks accomodation i only have $2600 so am really needing a job within that first three weeks lol, if your money does get low though there are options, i'm a member of both helpx and wwoof where you do about 5hrs work a day and get free accomodation and three free meals a day so can live, not spend a penny and job hunt for paid work
Thanks for all the advice, when do you arrive Wanders? just booked our flights and first weeks accommodation, saving as much as possible, hopefully have enough to travel up east coast for a while.
am landing the 21st may :D can't wait! least you have plenty of time to save, where are you flying into?
flying into Sydney via singapore 1 night what about you?
Good plan that night in singapore really makes the long flight so much easier, am doing a night in singapore as well then onto brisbane and a connecting flight upto cairns, gonna start up the top and head south to find work in nsw somewhere and that's about as far as my planning went haha

At what point do you have to prove you have the $5,000 AUD and how do you prove it, do you need to provide bank statements?
Thanks
