Traveling Solo to Melbourne this Nov

Hi guys, i'm traveling solo for the first time and while i'm really psyched, I'm pretty nervous and don't really know what to expect. I've heard how "ridiculously" expensive Melbourne is but I'm not sure how true that is. I'll be here for about a week-ish. Any recommendations on how much i should bring for expenses? Im also looking at heading down to torquay for a surf camp. Tips would be helpful!

Hi dynyn,

Welcome to Travellerspoint!

Melbourne can be expensive but there are also plenty of cheap eats and activities available. There's often free events on, but like most cities, the fees for big attractions can be costly.

Your expenses will depend on what you want to do but as a general guide, expect to pay $4-5 for coffee, $18-28 for a main meal in a basic restaurant/pub, $22-38 for mains in a mid-range restaurant. Lunch places, cafes and some cheap takeaways will have dishes under $18. Most of Melbourne's big attractions have their own website so you can check their entry prices before you go. Daily Zone 1 public transport tickets (called myki) are $7.16 on weekdays and only $6 on weekends.

A Torquay surf is also a great idea! Did it years ago and had a great time; I think it was with Go Ride A Wave.

Hope some of this gives you an idea. Good luck with your budgeting!

Thanks for the tips, Kellie!

Hi Dynyn

Sorry I'm a bit late to the post. What date do you arrive, and where are you staying?

Hey Charlottenorky,

I'll be arriving on 14th morning. I still haven't decided on accommodation cos plans are still pretty vague. Will you be in Melbourne then too? Where will you be staying?

Hey, I just decided to sign up to a forum for the same reason and seen your post! I am also travelling solo to Melbourne in November! I'm really looking forward to it but also getting pretty nervous now and don't really have much planned out! Are you travelling for work or just general travel?

Hello everyone,

I'm also travelling alone to Melbourne in November.

I haven't really made any plans tbh. I think I'll book into base for my first week but other than that that's pretty much it. I've got a friend who's out there and instead of Sydney for Christmas and NYE's (as very commercialised and very expensive!) she's thinking about getting a campervan and driving up to Caines. So I might do that. I wanna work there but again...when and doing what I have no idea lol

What about you? When do you fly out? And how long are you out there for?

Hey ladies, actually I'm there for a holiday. Ill be out there for abt 8 days. When will you be arriving? If we are hitting Melbs about the same time, i call for a hangout/meetup!
