Impossible to answer when you give no clue as to budget/interests/likes/dislikes/etc... but with decent funds driving is ALWAYS the best way to discover/explore the US (and Canada) but if money is short then bus travel raises its ugly head...
Note: "Beginning of the year" equals winter in the US. That's a whole new set of travel variables to consider...

If flying is not an option, crunch some numbers on renting a car. There is usually a hefty drop off fee when you turn the car back in at a different location. Check. There is the bus as Terry suggested. Several companies to choose from. Compare that option to renting a vehicle.
Amtrak offers a 15 day that might work for you. Good luck with your planning.
Hello....thanks for all the tips. I was looking at trains but didn't see the 15 day pass option. I'll have another look. Flying is an option but wanted to see as much as I can.

It looks like $449 for 15 days, 8 segments on Amtrak. That might be the best way to see the US and avoid flying to the East coast. Good luck.
I think you could rent a car and drive. I drove from Los Angeles to Portland Maine. It was fun took 2 weeks to do it. We saw so many places and stayed in hotels and motels and enjoy every bit of it. here are few of the places you could visit on the way, first you could visit the death valley, Las vegas, Moab UT ( archers national park), Denver, CO, after that we haven't seen much until we reach Chicago is a good place to visit and there are so much to see. Then go to Michigan see the great lakes and then head on to NY.
This is what we did, we spent about $600 in gas and $700 in hotels for the 2 weeks. Hope you enjoy the trip and find the best way to travel.
If you travel by air, its just 6h and train is also good but you don't get to see much.
Ahhhh thanks....sounds fab. I'd really love to drive but because I'm going on my own depends if I meet people with the same idea or I could talk some of my friends into joining me for a couple of weeks.
