First time traveller to SE Asia.

Hi my name is Jason I am 21 years old just signed up to this site but hope to stay active in the future,

FYI.

Depending on where you fly from a round trip plane ticket might save you a lot of money compared to buying two one way flights. Do the math! (Transportation between Thailand and nearby countries is not expensive.) For Thailand without a round trip flight, or proof of onward travel within 30 days, you will have to buy a tourist visa. (If traveling with UK passport.)

You can't work in Thailand without a work permit. They are not easy to get. So the money you start with is what you have for the entire time. The month you visit will determine the weather you get. Visit during high season and hotels will cost more. The cost of your airplane tickets might cost more for high season.

When will you show up? Buy or borrow a Lonely Planet travel guide for some guidance.

Knowing how many days you will be in Asia makes it easier to plan a daily budget. You should know how much your budget allows each day for hotel or hostel if you need suggestions. When you ask for hotel recommendations include your price range per day. (Use a specific amount - not cheap or economy or budget priced because these terms don't mean the same to everyone.)

Do some research on visa requirements for each country. Read up on currency peculiarities for each country. For Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia don't leave those countries with their currency - hard to change it elsewhere and in general no one wants it!

Routine safety warnings. If you chum around with "new friends" who do dope be careful because you might be nabbed with them. These countries take drugs seriously and punishment is not a slap on the wrist like many Western countries. If you travel with dopers always check your bags for their drugs. For each country do a Google check for scams to avoid. When on buses or trains don't leave money, electronics, passport or valuables in any checked in bag or a bag / pack out of sight. Have bags or backpack that you can lock. When you have random guests visit your room make sure wallet, passport, cell phone, etc. is out of sight. (Locked in your bag, or hotel safety box so your guest doesn't run out the door with your stuff when you use the toilet.)

Make Google checks your friend! But always verify any facts you come across.

Have fun.
