I guess it all depends on what nationality you are and if you are pulled out for checking of luggage and immigration and no one knows this until they arrive.
Also you need time after landing to collect your luggage and this can be quick or take forever.
I do lots of traveling and you never know how many planes are landing at the same time then it can be horrendous.
I would say you will be pushed to get to your train, best buy a flexi train ticket so you can travel on any train any time.
I think this is one of the good reasons to travel hand luggage only. You both avoid the baggage reclaim wait time and you beat your plane's passengers to the passport queue.
I've been out of Manchester Airport in around 15 minutes but as Jeanie says it can vary. What nationality are you - are you likely to sail through without any hassle from Immigration? Will you travel hand luggage only? If those are both ticks then personally I'd try for that 9am train.
It also depends on your carrier and whether or not the plane can be relied upon to land on time. If your carrier has a history of being late on this route, 9am might be pushing it a bit.
Thank you for the feedback so far... we are traveling from the US (US citizens) and because we will be spending 3 weeks, we unfortunately will have to check baggage.
"Have to"? Taking large luggage is a choice not a necessity. Better get a later train. Great example of how travelling light lets you do more.

If you are on a Tourist Visa DO NOT WORK and stick with the rules.
Do not bring any food stuff or DRUGS into the country.
My husband needs medication and he has a letter from his doctor which states this and he takes it with him when he travels.
Fill in the immigration card which will be given you on the plane and answer the questions truthfully.
If you have a criminal record you must disclose this, if you have and have said you haven't and they check you will be put on the next plane back home.
These are all things that apply whenever you enter any country.
You should get thru without problems like we mostly do so have a great time in England.
