No personal experience here, but while we were travelling a couple of friends did banana and melon picking in QLD. I picked them up each day and it didn't sound like much fun - hot, humid and lugging heavy fruit around. I think picking something lighter that you don't have to bend down to collect would be easier - grapes or apples maybe? Don't think you'll make your fortune, but it's enough to live on.
