Tags on blogs - what are they for?

Now that the categories have disappeared, replaced by tags, I am curious how they are used.

They are really mostly a way to give everyone 'free form categories', probably the single most requested feature for the blogs over the past few years You can turn on a tag cloud already in the Settings area of your blog. Not sure how it will come out design wise on customized blog layouts, but we can of course help with that if needed. There's also a tag cloud on the main page.

In terms of helping a search engine, I'd say the answer is yes and no Our new search engine doesn't use them, so it won't help there and I doubt it would help in Google. But for example technorati still uses these I believe, so it might help with ranking there (although technorati is kind over the hill anyway). I probably wouldn't bother with going back and redoing all your old entries (the categories on those entries were automatically converted to tags) unless you really feel like it.

Updating the FAQ is definitely on the to do list!!

I went back and updated a few, mostly to group some blogs that I had wanted to for a time (one of the reasons I was one of the one's asking for it).

Question - in the "tags" view of the blogs, there is a line that appears above the blogs that says "Only showing entries about existential_migration from Greg Wesson's Esoteric Globe. View entries about existential_migration from all Travellerspoint blogs." ()

What type of text is this in the style sheet? I'd like to change the formatting of it so that it lines up with the main content pane.

Greg

Adding this line should fix it:

p#tag_link_tp {margin:0 30px 0 90px;}

If you find it too close to the text above or underneath it, add 10px (or whatever value you like) where those two 0's are.

Perfecto, gracias.
