I looked up prices from '06. I paid $22 for a 1 day, 2 day was quoted at $55. I am sure they are more now. A blogger paid $105 for a 3 day this summer.
I was just reading some on HB tours. Many are not happy . I suggest you read as many blogs as possible. Most tours really do feel like cattle boats. Herded off your bus, onto a tour boat, not a nice start to your day on HB. Same with the cave tour. There are literally dozens of tour boats hitting each tour sight at the same time. This was in Feb on a cool, rainy day. Got to be worse in better weather. All follow the same routine. I would read many blogs and then wait until I got to HAN before booking anything. HB has become a tourist 'must see' so expect crowds and being herded from place to place.
I would recommend spending a night in HCMC, then head to Hoi An and then finish of with Hanoi and Halong Bay. Hoi An, Halong Bay and Hanoi I would consider to be must-sees and I reckon they're do-able in a short period of time if you don't mind the internal flights. I wasn't a big fan of HCMC, so depending on what time you're arriving you could get away with spending just 1 night here. Hoi An has plenty to see, so I would give this the most time. There's also a beach not too far from the old town - we cycled there and it took about 30-40mins. It's also possible to stay on the beach, though I think this is likely to be pricier.
