If you don't especially need luxury lodges, you can find accommodation in all SA national parks at www.sanparks.org, prices vary from as little as €10 camping, €40 in chalet for 2 people etc. All bookable online. That's the way i did it, very comfortable lodgings

When you look at the amount of safari lodges available - it's quite overwhelming. And most are pricey - especially the more famous ones. If budget is a serious concern - do look at SANparks offerings - often simple but will do the job. Another lodge I've visited and was very impressed by its value-for-money is Thornhill Safari Lodge - see http://www.thornhillsafarilodge.com/home.aspx for details. They're close to Kruger and can do open vehicle game-drives at nearby Thornybush Lodge. Hope that helps!
Many thanks for all these suggestions ... I have looked at the ThornHill Lodge, which looks good. Anyone been to the , I think they're a nice place as a safari holidays destinations, and I'd like to find some people who've been there to let me know what it was like. It's near , which is interesting ... By the way, what are safaris like in the Kruger Park, how does it compare to a private game reserve?

Hi Carla - lots of difference from Kruger to private reserves - here are the main ones I can think of:
- Kruger = commercial - restaurants, kiosks, many tarred roads, speed limits, opening & closing times especially of gates at camps, rules, generally self-drive except special tours eg commercial operators, night drives, etc. Kruger you need to stay inside your car at all times - except at designated hides & picnic spots.
- Kruger is huge - I think about the size of Wales, they say. There's something so awe-inspiring standing at Olifants camp looking out over the river. And you know that, as far as your eye can see, is wild, alive, African bush.
- Private reserve - usually have to go in their open vehicles with trackers (ie no self-drive). Definitely see more and get 'up close and personal'. Often off-road, or small, dirt roads. More relaxed rules eg can stop off in the middle of nowhere for snacks and sundowners - although with drivers/guides at all times. More focus on open air bush experience eg meals served in open lapas/bomas at night around fires. More personal attention from staff/guides/drivers.

I do not know if you are still looking for info on a private preserve or not.
If so, take a look at Pongola. We have stayed there several times, it is quite luxurious, great people and very reasonable.
They also have an abundance of game.
They do not appear to allow web links here
