I wanted to open a topic about the Event Calendar, because it was mentioned in the new layout topic, but only very briefly, and it not as visable as having an own topic.
A few points on this which will hopefully clarify it.
- The start date is not necessarily the start of the "event". It is the date that we start showing it on the TP front page. It will continue showing on the front page until another event takes its place. So there is no need for an end date. We don't necessarily want to show an event for its entire duration - just for a couple of days ideally. This also explains why La Noche en Blanco was still showing. There was no event to take its place yet. Eric just moved up the Latvian one (which runs for a whole month), so now that is showing.
- When the event shows on the front page, it needs to have a featured article with it. This is why there's a warning about that in the events calendar now. If an event goes live on the front page and the article isn't featured, then there will be a weird gap where the featured article is meant to be. It's not a problem adding an event in the future linked to a non-featured article. But it DOES need to be featured before the date is upon us. This can also therefore be considered a list of articles that need our attention prior to the live date. Might be worth having a guide article where we list these articles that are need to be featured by a certain date.
Hope that explains it ! It's obviously early days for this feature and there's bound to be lots of ways we can improve on it.

thanks for clearing things up. Just one thing that seems weird to me, it to show an event that has already finished, for me there is no logic in that. (or should I write in my calendar to check next year if it takes place again?) Would it be better to e.g. in the case of La Noche en Blanco, to start showing it, 1 or 2 days before. (in other words create a start date before the actual event takes place.) On the other hand I don't think that people will think in this way. To be user friendly for users it might be better to let them enter the startdate of the event, and the system can calculate a day when it will be started to be shown. Which also leads to the question to what is done if there are more than one events on the same date. Will the system show randomly one of these events?
