Concerning street kids help I really recommend http://www.aldeayanapay.org/
Their website is pretty bad but their work for poor kids is serious and great for many year now
Concerning the things to do in Lima I recommend seeing miraflores , having a drink and/or eating at the larcomar cafe-cafe , in front of the sea , possibly going to the tayta if you like live music.
If you like good food, you have to know the peruvian cooking is really great ( and I m French :p) and the best restaurants are in Lima, I particularly recommend tanta, san antonio, la red and many others
If you plan on visiting the center of Lima, you need a full day to go to the center early in the morning and leave before night, Lima center after 19h is not very secure.
But advices depend on what kind of things you like, and how much time you are planning to spend in Lima before going to Cusco , just tell me more about yourself for more advices!
Concerning cusco, the altitude is important, a good thing can be to first go to arequipa, less altitude, spending 1 or 2 days there to accustom yourself to altitude, and then go to cusco.
I m french but I live in Lima for 2 years now, I d be happy to have a drink and show you 2 or 3 things in Lima.
Ah, an important point : do you speak spanish ?
Hi,
Thanks so much for taking the time to get back to me and for all your help and advice. It's great to hear about all the cafes and restaurants. As far as other interests go I'm pretty interested in history, especially social history, and live performances - music, dance or theatre.
In particular, thank you so much for the suggestion of Aldea Yanapay - I think they sound absolutely wonderful and can't wait to contact them when I have my travel dates firmed up.
I speak a little Spanish but am currently taking lessons to get it a little more up to scratch before my visit!
Many, many thanks again,
All the very best,
Krista
