Road trip from DAllas to Los Angeles

Hello
I am planning to go on a road trip from Dallas to Los Angeles with two friends.
We will be travelling from December 15t until the 21. During this time we have to get to L.A. and stay there for a couple of days. Then we will come back by plane.
I would like to know what are the stops we could make. What are the places worth seeing along the way.
Some of the places we would like to see are:
The Grand Canyon
Route 66
Also what is the weather going to be like? Is it safe to travel during that time or is it possible to find snow??
Thank you

Better you than me! Driving across Texas and New Mexico has to be one of the longest and most boring trips I've ever done, and it takes forever! I like Austin, the Carlsbad Caverns and Santa Fe as stops. You don't hit snow unless you go further north (once in New Mexico) into the Rockies. The chances of rain are very good. Why December?

Aw, it's not so bad--although doing this in December is a bit of a hit and miss thing with the weather.

Since you have the time, I'd see the places Daawgon recommends. If your time was shorter (like four days or less), then I'd say either see Austin and the Carlsbad Caverns (southern route) or see Santa Fe, Route 66, the Grand Canyon, and Las Vegas (northern route), but not all of these.

In your case, you take the southern route first, then go from Carlsbad Caverns up to Santa Fe (which takes an extra day), and then follow the rest of the trip. You could also skip Las Vegas and go to Sedona instead if you take this route.

Fodorites, I truly need your help. I am trying to plan a road trip from Los Angeles to Florida and back. I have never attempted a road trip this long and have really only taken several day road trips as child.

Well December because it's the only time in which I can go. After that I will be leaving the USA.(I'm not American)
I know it's not the best time but I'l try to make the best out of it anyways!
I would prefer the north route. SAnta Fe, route 66 and Grand canyon. Won't have time to stop at Las Vegas. :-(
How far is the Grand Canyon from Santa fe?

It's about 460 miles from the Grand Canyon to Santa Fe (or vice versa, since you will be going in the opposite direction--that is, going to Santa Fe first and then to the Grand Canyon second).

It normally takes about 7 1/2 hours drive--but you will be passing through Flagstaff, where it often snows in the winter--so check the weather first--and be careful driving as the roads and bridges get slick with ice--especially in the evenings.

Enjoy

Ok thanks!
But then if I have to pass trough Flagstaff anyway is it closer if I just get to Flagstaff and then go the Grand Canyon from there?
It looks easier...
thank you!
