Travelling the US, need some help with itinery

Hi, I'm hoping to travel in the states from start of October to start of December.

I'm thinking those destinations you list and your 2 month time frame is just about right, adding more destinations wont enhance your trip. You could spend your entire time in any one of those places you've listed.
Maybe a little more info on your likes and plans and what you expect of the places listed.

How long do you think is adequete in each place? I did a rough itinery and found that even if I spent a week in most places I'd have quite a lot of days spare.

If you are into national parks you could take a drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway,(500 miles)
maybe a trip out to Key West if you get to Florida,
a tour around the Mountains of New England
On the west coast a trip down the California coast between San Francisco to LA
A visit to Yosemite
Visit the Grand Canyon.
In Utah Bryce Canyon and Zion National park, maybe a side trip up to Bonneville salt flats to watch speed events.
In December you may get some skiing done in the mountains.
If you are driving a lot of opportunities will arise spontaneously as you see an interesting sign by the side of the road indicating an up coming point of interest, could be a scenic overlook, some sort of craft shop, a winery etc.etc.
You could also Google any state and ask them to send you one of their travel guides which will include a road map and a book telling you of all events and activities and points of interest.

I'm sure if you poke around in this California travel site you'll see either a downloadable travel guide or a place where you can get them to send you one,all states have a similar site =

Good luck and tell us how it went when you get back.

Cheers again Jambo some good ideas there mate, my main problems are arising of how to get from New Orleans to Vegas via Flagstaff, think I'm getting a good idea of where I wanna go now.

New Orlean to Flagstaff will take about 24-30 long boring hours on a Greyhound bus, rent a car in Flagstaff and spend a few days/week touring Vegas,Grand Canyon,Utah's national parks Zion and Bryce canyon.bus to LA then another rent a car and drive the LA to SF on rt 1 and 101, Monterrey Aquarium gets a big thumbs up and so does Yosemite national park. east of SF..

Free tour of Yosemite =

Since you're coming in the Fall, you might want to see the fall colors in Vermont/New Hampshire/Maine (north of Boston). The other beauty spot is out west in the Rockies - the mountains/ski resorts of Colorado are very special (Aspen, Telluride, Breckenridge). The Pacific Northwest (Oregon/Washington/Idaho) is nice because it's not as crowded as California and it's very green and friendly.
