Not sure about accommodation, however in regards to traveling to Split you can also take a bus, which is relatively quick, cheap, easy and some fantastic scenery. However, I believe the Ferry Dubrovnik - Split should be at least once a day as it is the most popular route.
I also recommend the island of Hvar as another destination to add to your Croatia trip. It's only a short ferry trip from Split.
