Europe Travel October - Travel Buddies for 40-plus couple

Hi there. We are a young and fit 40-plus couple travelling to Europe minus the kids for the first time in 15plus years. WooooHoooo....

Our intent is to experience some off the beaten track stuff....eg. Tulip fields in Netherlands

Sadly the tulip fields are only in bloom between March and May. In September/October, they'll be extremely boring fields of sand. No worries, though, there's still loads of worthwhile things to do to very easily fill three weeks.

Personal recommendation for an off-the-beaten-track area in Germany would be Saxon Switzerland, on the border with the Czech Republic. I happen to have raved a bit about it (for hiking purposes) just last week, so rather than repeating myself, I'll link you to . If you're not much into hiking, then most of the cities in Germany are worth a visit for a day or two of exploring, particularly mid-sized ones. (Some of my favorites: Aschaffenburg, Bielefeld, Bonn, Düsseldorf, Göttingen, Kassel, Köln, Leipzig, Mainz, Würzburg... but really, the only city I've experienced would I would give a miss would be Frankfurt.) Note that October has a large share of festivals in Germany; you'll have heard of Munich's Oktoberfest, but there's a lot of similar (if much smaller) fests in other cities - something to either avoid or seek out depending on personal preferences.)
